Justice and Zachary

Justice and Zachary were married in 2021, and I touched base with Justice (and her mother Joni) to see if she had any tips and tricks for others who might DIY their own wedding flowers, as well as to hear how her experience went! See below for the story of her journey! Justice has a lovely mother, who spearheaded the shopping of DIY flowers, its so great when flower arrangements are a whole family thing!

The Location:

Ceremony & reception were held at the ‘Diamond in the Rough’ event center near Sundre Alberta

The Date:

Wedding was on September 18th, 2021

Q: What tips do you have for a wedding flower DIYer:

  • Watch a variety of YouTube videos. While there are some definite Do’s & Don’ts when it comes to arranging flowers, there are so many approaches and there’s no single right way to do things- so have fun and get creative!
  • Have lots of buckets (I got mine for $1 each from Save-on-Foods floral department) as well as flower food, and 2 sizes of floral shears; one for large stems and one for more delicate stems
  • Relatively speaking, greenery is cheap…so order several different varieties and have fun with it; it’s an inexpensive way of elevating a bouquet beyond the ordinary
  • I used some chicken wire from the dollar store along with a pair of craft pliers and shaped wire cages to hold the stems in place as I put the bouquets together- this would be my #1 recommendation!

Q: Why Did You Decide to Design Your Own Wedding Flowers?

  • Price- My daughter had a whole Pinterest folder of bouquets she liked, and the quotes for her dream flowers were crazy! I realized pretty early in the planning process that DIY was the only way to deliver what she wanted on budget
  • Consistency- I wanted the bouquets, arch flowers, aisle arrangements and tablecenters to all be consistent, with the same colours and feel and I was able to achieve this by doing them all myself
  • Making my daughter happy! – the ONE thing in the whole wedding that my daughter was very particular about was the exact shades of the flowers.  I knew if I did the flowers I could guarantee the exact colours she wanted whereas I know with florists you don’t always get exactly what you envision

Q: Did you DIY Anything Else For The Wedding?

I DIY’d pretty much everything!  I started as soon as the ring was on my daughter’s finger and gradually checked everything off the list!

Q: What Was the Theme For the Wedding?

The theme of the wedding was a mix of boho, bougie and rustic.

Q: What Was The Best Part Of The Wedding?

My favorite part of the wedding was EVERYTHING!  It was the perfect day in every way and I wouldn’t have changed a thing!

Q: What Was The Biggest Splurge For The Wedding?

Our biggest splurge was the venue.  ‘Diamond in the Rough ‘ was a picturesque setting with every conceivable amenity.  The family who own and manage it went above and beyond to make our day perfect.

Vendors:

  • Our photographer, Darla, at Mustang Photography came early, stayed late, and delivered over 800 phenomenal pictures!
  • Our Caterer, RC Eats (Rajapacsa Catering) was great to work with and delivered a meal that friends and family are still raving about.
  • Flowers were from You Floral

Their Flower order:

  • Waxflower (White) x 1 bunch

  • Sunset Leucadendron x 1 bunch
  • Lisianthus (Peach) x 1 bunch

Joni’s Review:

I’m so thankful for You Floral and the opportunity it provides for Diy’ers to access flowers and greenery that would be hard to get otherwise! Sarah’s customer service was amazing and I appreciated how quickly she responded to my questions and concerns. The website, videos and blogs were full of useful information and positioned me to feel confident about doing the wedding florals. I absolutely loved the process from start to finish. My only regret is that I don’t have a good excuse to do it all over again!
