Is DIY’ing Your Wedding Flowers Right For You? Here’s What You Need to Know

n

You’ve pinned the perfect bouquet, bookmarked floral inspo galore, and maybe even imagined yourself surrounded by buckets of blooms the day before your wedding. But the big question remains: Should you DIY your wedding flowers?

If you’re dreaming of adding a personal, creative touch to your big day — and saving some money while you’re at it — DIYing your wedding flowers might be a great fit. But it’s not for everyone. Here’s what you should consider before grabbing your floral shears and diving in.

💐 The Perks of DIY Wedding Flowers

1. It’s Budget-Friendly (Seriously!)

Florist-arranged wedding flowers can cost $2,000–$5,000+, depending on the size and style of your wedding. DIYing gives you more control over your floral budget, especially if you’re working with affordable blooms like baby’s breath or carnations  or greenery like eucalyptus. Couples that order through You Floral and design their own wedding flowers generally spend $500 – $800 for ALL their wedding flowers, which is a mind-blowing savings compared to hiring a traditional florist

2. Total Creative Control

You’re the designer. You get to choose the exact look and feel — whether that’s wild and whimsical, moody and modern, or classic and romantic. Plus, DIY lets you experiment with color palettes and textures that are meaningful to you.

3. It’s a Memorable Experience

Many of our You Floral couples say that flower prep became one of the most special parts of their wedding weekend. Gather your wedding party or family, crank up some tunes, and create arrangements together. It’s bonding, it’s creative, and it makes those flowers even more sentimental.

Why Our Couples DIY’ed Their Wedding Flowers

We decided to DIY because the cost of other Floral options were too expensive and outside of our budget. It ended up being a fun bonding experience for the girls in my family (mom, aunt, sister, and grandma)

I chose YouFloral because it was a more affordable option for getting the florals I hoped for. I loved the flower package I got (Taupe & Terracotta) and the bouquets we were able to make with them. With the help of a florist connection we were able to have a lot of fun putting it all together. If you’re willing to put in the effort of a DIY night with the bridal party, choosing YouFloral is a good way to go!! The flowers were beautiful and great quality. So happy with the results.

My husband and I are both in ministry positions with the college and needed to work on a small budget, and though I had never done DIY wedding flowers, I thought I could, and a friend offered to help. I checked local shops and grocery stores and big box store floral departments, but when I found You Floral, I felt the most comfortable with ordering flowers from your company, and I’m glad I did. Thank you for a great experience!

🌿 The Challenges to Consider

1. Timing

Fresh flowers are perishable, and most arrangements should be made 2-3 days before your wedding  (e.g. arrange your flowers on a Thursday if you have a Saturday wedding) to ensure they stay at peak beauty. That means your floral work may happen while other last-minute details are also in motion. Ask yourself: Will I feel overwhelmed? Do I have help?

2. You’ll Need Some Prep & Practice

DIY floral design is a skill — but a learnable one! With the right guidance (hi 👋 we’re here for that!), you can learn to make bouquets, centerpieces, and more. But don’t wait until the night before to try something for the first time. Give yourself a couple of practice runs.

3. You’ll Need Space + Tools

You’ll need buckets, snips, floral tape , and a semi-cool storage space (like a garage or basement) to keep your flowers fresh. Having a dedicated flower zone will help reduce mess and stress.

🧠 Who Should DIY Their Flowers?

DIY might be perfect if:

  • You enjoy creative projects
  • You’re working within a specific budget
  • You have friends/family excited to help
  • You have some flexibility in your wedding-day timeline

DIY might not be the best choice if:

  • You’re a high-stress, tight-schedule couple
  • You want elaborate installations (like large floral arches or hanging features)
  • You won’t have help or time in the 48 hours leading up to the big day
